Feeding Care of Your New Puppy
Small puppies have different and unique needs due to their small mouths, small stomachs and their growth spurts to adult size in a short amount of time. A poor quality diet will fill a puppies stomach before food can be eaten to satisfy his nutritional needs which can result in improper muscle and skeletal development and growth. You need to a feed a puppy food formulated to be nutrient dense to meet the needs of your puppies growing needs.Weaning puppies from mommy, I feed puppy a tiny bit of low fat cottage cheese starting at five weeks of age. I also wet their puppy dry-food to make a mush out of it at first - to look like runny oatmeal. As puppy gets a few days older I make it thicker; until by the time they are ready to leave for their new home, your puppy will be eating Eukanuba Puppy Chow (Small breed Petite race) I will send a sample of food home with your puppy. Please feed this to the puppy for the first two weeks while puppy is going through a stressful time of getting use to its new home and master. If you want to change puppy’s food, please do it slowly over a period of two weeks. Puppy can get diarrhea or loose stools from a food change.
If your puppy should get diarrhea, protein and starch such as chicken and rice, instead of their regular food will help to calm down their tiny little stomachs. cottage cheese, yogurt, and a jar of baby food chicken. These foods can help your puppy get back to its regular stools. Never let a sick puppy go more than a day before calling your veterinarian. If you see throwing up, diarrhea, blood in stool or a fever, take your puppy to your veterinarian.
If your little puppy is shaking, acting cold, lacks energy or seems listless, it can be a sugar drop and very, very serious for small puppies. This is called hypoglycemia. (Is when puppy blood sugar falls to a danger point). Nutri-Cal is something you should have on hand for when you bring puppy home. If your puppy shows any of the above signs, a finger tip full of Nutri-Cal could save its life. Karo syrup or honey can be used also, but does not last as long as the Nutri-Cal, and the blood sugar can become low again in a short time.
Feeding puppies and adult dogs good quality dog food also helps their teeth. Small dogs can have a dental problem, eating dry food helps to keep their teeth cleaner. Please get them good dog chews, watch for any small pieces, puppy can choke on. When the bone or chew gets to small, take it away and give puppy a new one.
A big no-no for dogs and puppies:
Do not feed chocolate or onions!!!
